The Strokes, I started listening to them again and it’s bringing back memories. My first concert:
Late night, a girl who I thought would never like me (and she felt the same about me) who had now taken a special place in my heart. Two men who took their places as fathers. Excitement drawing itself into an explosion within. What to wear? Will there be dancing? Drinking? Food? Free stuff? Will I get to meet the band? My heart was pounding with every new question, this was my first adventure into music. We met at her house and drove to Milwaukee. Now I know what you’re thinking “But you’re from Milwaukee? How can that be exciting?” Actually I am not from Milwaukee, I’m from Waukesha, which is about an hour away but it’s not like a Wyoming hour, it’s a city hour… if that makes sense. Going to Milwaukee always means fun, whether it be the zoo, mall, museum, movies, or music, it’s always fun. On the way there my father had burned a few The Strokes cd’s and that’s what we listened to, it was sort of like pregaming. Hannah and I walked in and showed our tickets. I remember not knowing how to feel, not knowing what to do. Concerts include lots of strangers of all ages, lots of drunk people, lots of dancing, and lots of loudness. I hardly heard anything that was being said yet everyone was talking. Everything from here till the music was confusion and anticipation, I don’t remember much. (I was like 13?) The music started and so did the moshing. Why people we moshing to The Strokes, I still don’t understand. Hannah tried to teach me how to dance, and to this day I still can’t, or more like I refuse to dance… There were lights and sounds, not much talking, mostly off key singing. I felt excited and happy. I felt energized and stoked. Life was at it’s highest. Then it hit, well more specifically, an elbow hit Hannah. The guy was pretty nice, but Hannah had a bloody nose. And before I knew it the concert was ending and we were in the bathroom. We left shortly after and we were beat. Tired and pooped out. Never feeling such a thrill. The darkness and bright lights, the calm music and crazy dancing. Everything about it was a new experience. Something perfect. Something I will never forget. Something special.
